Johnstone Boiler & Tank has been in the field maintenance industry for many years. The primary focus has been installation and repair of heat exchangers, pressure vessels and fire tube boilers. Recent diversification has expanded the Field Maintenance Division to include larger equipment in the steam plants of pulp and paper mills. An overview of the field capabilities and some of the key areas of expertise are listed below.

Tanks

Johnstone Boiler & Tank has been manufacturing and repairing tanks since its inception. On-site repair of API 720 & 650 designed tanks are a routine occurrence. Field maintenance has been performed on dissolving tanks, black liquor storage, salt cake mix tanks, flash tanks and SO₂ storage tanks. Johnstone Boiler has in-house rolling capabilities for up to 1-1/2" stainless steel, 8 ft. wide which provides for exceptionally quick turnaround of rolled components. A recent order supporting field maintenance called for rush replacement of 100 ft. of a boiler stack in 8 ft. diameter sections.

Retube of heat exchanger equipment is another routine component of the Field Maintenance Division. Retubing has been performed on liquor heaters, evaporators, heat exchangers and titanium re-boilers. Johnstone Boiler & Tank is one of the few companies that performs titanium weld repairs in the field.

Recent expansion has encompassed this specialized area of field maintenance. Activities of repair on recovery and power boilers include some of the following tasks:

• Generating Bank tube replacement
• Waterwall panel replacement
• Sootblower removal, repair and reinstallation
• Overlay of composite tubing.
• Overlay of superheater bends, both carbon steel and low alloy
• Superheater bend replacement - carbon steel, alloy and composite tubing
• Overlay of economizer tubing
• Miscellaneous repairs to doors and wall boxes
• I.D. fan rotor replacement
• I.D. fan hard surfacing
• Ducting and breeching repair
• Cloth expansion joint repair
• Metal expansion joint replacement
• Multi-cone replacements
• Miscellaneous hydrograte repairs
• Cascade evaporator repair and retubing

Johnstone Boiler & Tank is well known as a dealer of new and used Cleaver Brooks and other firetube boilers. Installation, commissioning and servicing has been a part of regular business for many years. An inventory of boilers for permanent installation or for rental needs is available for quick response for all steam requirements. In addition to the above, Johnstone Boiler & Tank designs, registers and install pressure vessels, exchangers and similar equipment such as, but not limited to:

• flash tanks
• liquor heaters
• green liquor heater coolers
• shell and tube heat exchangers
• pressure vessels of all sizes and configurations

Johnstone Boiler & Tank’s Field Division employs personnel from the Marine Workers and Boilermakers Local #1. This flexible, diverse and skilled labour pool allows for the assembly of a maintenance team that can cover repairs to all types of equipment.
